This year marks the 25th anniversary of the ground breaking International Conference on Population and Development, which took place in Cairo in 1994. 

During the conference, leaders articulated a bold vision regarding the relationships between population, development and individual well-being. 

 

Its Programme of Action, adopted by 179 governments, recognized that reproductive health, as well as women’s empowerment and gender equality, are the pathway to sustainable development. 

 

The survey commenced on 5TH July 2019 in commemoration of the 2019 population day. 

 

This year the population day is anchor on the four cardinal points of ICPD target 25years ago, which are 

 

  1. Universal Education.
  2. Reduction of infant and child mortality
  3. Reduction of maternal mortality.
  4. Access to reproductive and sexual health services including family planning.

 

The  findings revealed that Nigerians have a substantial awareness of the effects of population increase.

47% of respondents claim to be aware of the topic of population rise, while 37% of respondents are unaware of the topic. Only 16% of  respondents claim they don’t care about the topic.

 

 IS THERE BALANCE IN THE GIRL CHILD EDUCATION IN NIGERIA?

    As one of the cardinal points of this year’s topic on 2019 World population day, people’s opinion on the sub-heading was sampled.

    

 

While 42% said there is a balance in the girl child education in Nigeria. 

50% were against it, saying that Nigeria is not taking girl child education serious, we are only trying to improve.

 

Nearly ten per cent of new-born deaths in the world last year occurred in Nigeria, a new report by the United Nations Children Fund, UNICEF, has revealed.

According to the report, five countries accounted for half of all new-born deaths last year, with Nigeria third in the list. These are India (24 per cent), Pakistan (10 per cent), Nigeria (9 per cent), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (4 per cent) and Ethiopia (3 per cent). 

Most new-born deaths occurred in two regions: Southern Asia (39 per cent) and sub-Saharan Africa (38 per cent). Our survey explored  the awareness of this trend.

 

REDUCTION IN INFANT MORTALITY RATE IN NIGERIA?

 

Though 63% believe  that infant mortality has drastically reduced over the years, 25% say infant mortality is still on the high side. While 12.5% people state that they are indifferent about the topic.

 

WHY DO WE STILL RECORD HIGH MATERNAL MORTALITY IN NIGERIA?

Despite several campaign by Government & CSO’s there is high rate of maternal mortality, which in turn affect population.

 

58% believe that  lack of access to medical service has been rated high as major cause of maternal mortality. 30% said that negligence by medical personnel is one of the most important factors responsible for maternal mortality. 41.7% says ignorance kills more than any other factor and 4% believes that poor hygiene is responsible for maternal mortality.

 

WHAT ARE THE WAYS TO REDUCE INFANT AND MATERNAL MORTALITY RATE?

 

While 32.1% support improve health care system in the country. 30% suggested that medical personnel be retrained for effective service delivery. 23.9% suggested that enlightenment be done in the rural areas by the government. 14% advocate for availability of drugs in the health centers is also a factor to be considered.

 

WHAT REGION HAS HIGH DEATH & BIRTH RATE IN NIGERIA?

Perceptions on fertility rate when compared to  data from the Nigerian bureau of statistics  indicate a significant level of accuracy. 62% of respondents list  that there is a is a higher fertility in the North-West and North-East.

Findings 26 % believes North Central has high number of death and birth rate. 32% believes North East has high number of death and birth rate. 30% believes North-West has high number of death and birth rate.

 

The Nigerian  Bureau of Statistics  list Jigawa state  with the highest fertility rate of 8.5 with Kano, Katsina and Kebbi  States on the average of 7.7

 

SHOULD GOVERNMENT INTRODUCE POLICIES THAT WILL CHECK OVER POPULATION?

 

59% respondents agree, 24% respondents do not agree. 16% respondents are indecisive.  

 

The Economist  in July 2017 published an article on “The Problems of Family Planning in Nigeria”. The author began with a well know reality;

“NOT everyone thinks birth control is a blessing. Boko Haram, a jihadist group that terrorises north-eastern Nigeria, deems artificial contraception to be a product of infidel learning, and therefore forbidden.”

 

The idea that females should avoid school, marry early (sometimes while still children) and have lots of babies. In all the areas the jihadists control, women have no choice.
